Divine Luck Points and Cards

“Divine Luck” cards (DLs) are inspired by the “Renown Points/cards” concept used in D&D Encounters. Many ideas were also adapted from Greg Bilsand's list.

DLs are minor intercessions by a divine agent on behalf of a character. (Non-religious PCs may refer to them as “Dumb Luck” cards.)

In terms of game mechanics, they are similar in concept to “renown cards” (ie. they are cards with a specific property or action). However there are some major differences:
  • ·There are many more types of card (over 50)
  • ·They are typically “single use only”.
  • ·They are far more easily obtained (compensating for their “single use” nature)
  • ·They can be accumulated, given away, sold or traded.

DL points are primarily acquired through good gamer activity, such as turning up to each session, developing your character in your own time. DL points may also arise while adventuring, sometimes as treasure, sometimes in the form of “blessings” from powerful NPCs, and sometimes as a reward for solving a dilemma. (See table below for how points are awarded).

DLs fall into three categories. They are:
  • ·Divine Luck (single use minor bonus)
  • ·Divine Boon (single use major bonus, or a magic item)
  • ·Divine Gift (permanent bonus such as +1 to an attribute)

Notes for above:

1 – If a player attends four consecutive sessions they earn a bonus 4 points. Their attendance then resets back to one at the next session for the purpose of this award.
2 – A character history must be written and shared with the entire party to earn this award. A PDF file with suggestions on how to write a character background can be provided if desired.
3 – To keep our host happy, I’ll award points for any D&D merchandise bought from the "Tin Soldier" store. Present a receipt to receive the points.
4 – A “campaign contribution” is the written development of “something interesting” which isn’t specifically adventure related, such as a guild/society, a region’s history, or the NPC’s of a major town. (As DM I reserve the right to over-rule any aspect, naturally). Awards greater than 5 points may result for particularly impressive work.
5 – After revising your “levelled up” character sheet with new powers, etc, the DM appreciates having a copy of your character sheet to refer to when developing adventures.
6 – The Player of the night award will be based on a vote. Players cannot vote for themselves. The winner gets 2 points, or 1 point each if there is a 2-3 way tie.

Upon reaching 100 points the points reset back to 0.

Players select their card at random from a deck. Bear in mind that there may be multiple copies of a card in the deck.

Clever players should be able to pick up a Divine Luck card every 1-2 sessions, a Divine boon after 4-6 sessions and a Divine gift every 3-4 months.
